About Sandbox

A mobile app to test and evaluate proximity marketing scenarios based on retail venue preferences. With the app help, retail stores or shopping malls have gotten a solid tool to test beacons and indoor advertising content on mobile devices.

Challenge

Challenge

Leantegra company required a solution for business customers who had almost no experience in proximity marketing and IoT indoor intelligence, but who still wanted to use it. The idea was to provide a mobile app as a simple way to solve both tech and usability issues with beacons testing. The goal was to increase the leads-to-real clients' conversion rate for company products and services.

Strategy

Challenge

The project had started with defining the main problems on the market and the goals that should be achieved. This approach included stakeholder interviews and building the UX strategy of the product.

What is the problem?
The company was losing potential customers who were interested in proximity marketing solutions, but who hesitated to start using it for some reasons. And one of these reasons is a beacon testing.

Why does it exist?
Any device testing like a beacon isn’t a simple task for many people. Potential customers are mostly owners of venues or marketing managers who don’t have desire to deal with complex tech stuff. They want to understand the process and advantages. If they like it, they buy it.

How to solve it?
To design a mobile app for business customers. The demo app should have a simple beacons testing and ability to receive and manage push notifications.

The whole design process was split into different steps.

Discovery

User stories
At first, I started learning the raw requirements been gathered by a business analyst in the team. It's the ongoing process which has always been updating with additional information. In the end, all user stories were complemented with mockups.  All materials were gathering in Confluence (Wiki).

Market research
I have researched the main competitors with similar products and tested apps for usability and features. All of them had different approaches as to how such beacon testing should work because of tech capabilities. Then I collated them by pros and cons with the business analyst.

User research
Since such products are not for the masses, we were gathering feedback from customers who are interested in proximity marketing solutions. The target group was owners of retail stores, marketing managers, and partners who want to enhance shopper experience and attract foot traffic.

“If we could test your Proximity solutions on our smartphones in an easy way, and understand how it works with your devices, maybe it would be easier for us to start using your platform.”

Ideation

Use cases
At first, I wanted to understand business use cases. I designed a flow in order to get the clear picture of how the process works for the company and customers.

Sketching
I used the pen&paper approach to visualize the first ideas. To keep the style and usability consisted between two mobile platforms, I chose a side menu.

Design

Visual design
The overall visual style for mobile apps was based on the Leantegra UI guidelines which I created for the whole platform.

Prototyping
For testing the UI, I used the Invision app and created a clickable mockup which was reviewed inside the company and by business customers.

UI Documentation

Once the testing was finished and approved with the stakeholders, I started creating UI documentation for iOS & Android front-end development. The main idea is to provide to developers easy-to-implement specifications.

Result

The Sandbox app has been successfully designed, developed and launched in the  app stores. By using the app, all potential and existing users of CVO platform are now able to test beacon devices with proximity marketing features.

It helped Leantegra company to pursue the project goals and deploy beacons devices in more than 300 venues in the US, Israel, and Ukraine.
