What I like about Kyla

It is a super product with few analogs—a MedTech AI-based mobile app. It is not just healthcare, it is a multi-service product with its own doctors, data researchers, clinics, lab tests, proprietary risk and diagnostic engines, goal-setting services, health data insights, and longevity programs. This allows users not only to address health issues but also to significantly extend lifespan.

If Bryan Johnson wasn’t spending $2M on his biohacking protocols, he would likely use Kyla.

Impact of Health Goals

Background

Background

I have a strong interest in healthcare-related products so that’s why I wanted to join the Kyla company and help them improve their mobile app experience.

Back then, in 2022, the app wasn’t in a good shape. The App Store rating was 2.3 and according to what users shared publicly, they weren’t satisfied and didn’t want to use it.

The good news that over the past 2 years, the app was significantly changed due to improvements and new features. It is very important since the revenue of healthcare apps is growing like it's on protein ($3.4B, US 2023 and aiming for $10B in 2027), and Kyla wants a piece of it.

Strategy

Strategy

I conducted separate interviews with the key members of the product: product manager, co-founder, Flutter lead and QA lead, to understand the product vision and the current issues they wanted to address with my help.

It was a starting point for creating initial requirements and providing a design strategy from my side.

Discovery & Research

Discovery & Research

Heuristic Evaluation & Overall Review

I've been in a situation already when a product was live and being used, but it required a lot of improvements, and user satisfaction rate was low.

So I started with a classical Heuristic evaluation observing each screen, explaining any issues, and providing recommendations via a report. Also, the design process and collaboration with developers and QA.

UI/UX Review
Data Research

Data Research

I worked closely with PMs and an analyst to define and set the necessary metrics for key app services in Tableau to get real data.

This allowed us to identify drop-off screens, as well as usage and engagement issues, which were then analyzed and planned for upcoming updates.

User Research

I collaborated with PMs and representatives in our clinics who had direct feedbacks from patients (complains and wishes regarding the app). Also, to get the full picture, I used Maze to test new designs or Usertesting for reviews.

That insight pointed out what issues should have been fixed first in order to improve metrics for the current product: app navigation, insurance, after-visit

User Research
Competitive Analysis

Competitive Analysis

Since Kyla was planned as a super app (it has many services) I had to discover different healthcare domains in order to find our key competitors.

Appointments
Lab Tests
Biomarkers
Longevity

User Personas

The good thing about existing products is that it is possible to gather more detailed information about current customers, focusing on their needs and experiences.

We identified who was using the app the most and determined our target audience for the new services according to the business requirements. This led us to define the following three types of users.

Business User

Mark, 52y

Sales Manager

Goal

Regularly undergo medical check-ups and tests to meet company and insurance requirements.

Private User

Anna, 34y

Teacher

Goal

Quickly book consultations, and receive test results whenever any symptoms or health concerns arise.

Longevity User

Jack, 42y

Entrepreneur

Goal

Increase awareness of his health to extend life, improve quality of life, and maintain overall wellness.

Design Challenges

Design Challenges

I had to deal with two challenges simultaneously: fixing the current design, which was already in use and required improvements, and creating new features.

I suggested starting with a design system using Atomic Design to restore mocks and user flows in Figma. Having needed components allowed me switching between different tasks.

I focused on the architecture and on presenting the new navigation. This was crucial because the app already had navigation issues, and we needed to ensure that upcoming services would be easily accessible in the app.

When I work with mobile design, I always use sketching. It allows me to focus and visualize key issues and ideas right away before getting deeper into the high-fidelity process.

The new feature I've designed from scratch is a part of the Longevity program, which provides users with personalized health goals. According to statistics, coordinated and controlled treatment empowers doctors to significantly improve patients' health outcomes.

Nutrition Goals

Another Longevity-based personalized goal I worked on focuses on nutrition. It allows users to manage their diet and find foods in the app that are prescribed by a doctor. Users can even order these directly from providers through the app.
